Beeswax food wraps

A natural, ecological replacement for plastic wrap

Imagine never having to buy plastic wrap or aluminium foil again. Imagine being able to store food in a healthy, ecological way that does no harm to the planet and lasts you for years. This is not a dream – these are beeswax wraps, a revolution in food storage that is really a return to a traditional way of living. Our wraps are handmade from 100% cotton, impregnated with natural beeswax from our own farm, plant oils and natural resin. Every wrap is unique, functional and fully compostable.

What are beeswax wraps?

Beeswax wraps are pieces of cotton fabric soaked in a mixture of beeswax, plant oils and natural resin. This combination makes the fabric water-resistant, flexible and self-adhesive – perfect for wrapping and storing food.

When you warm the wrap with the heat of your hands, the wax becomes soft and pliable, allowing you to wrap any food or container. As it cools, the wrap holds its shape and creates an airtight seal.

How do we make our beeswax wraps?

What is in our wraps:

  • 100% cotton fabric – a natural, durable base
  • Beeswax from our own farm – straight from our hives in Gornja Lisina
  • Plant oil – coconut or jojoba oil for flexibility
  • Natural resin – for extra tackiness and durability
  • And nothing else. No synthetic materials, no chemicals, no plastic.

We make every wrap by hand on the farm. We carefully cut the cotton fabric to the desired dimensions, then coat it evenly with a melted mixture of wax, oil and resin. Once it has cooled and set, the wrap is ready to use – flexible, fragrant and completely natural.

Why use beeswax wraps?

1. An ecological alternative to plastic
The average family in Serbia uses about ten rolls of plastic wrap a year, which ends up in landfill where it takes hundreds of years to break down. One beeswax wrap can last a year or longer, replacing hundreds of metres of plastic wrap. That is an enormous contribution to reducing plastic waste.

2. A healthier option for storing food
Plastic wrap can release microplastics and chemicals into food, particularly on contact with fats or acids. Our beeswax wraps are 100% natural – just beeswax, cotton, plant oil and resin. Nothing that could harm you or your family.

3. Value for money
Although the initial price is higher than a single roll of plastic wrap, beeswax wraps last 12–18 months with regular use. A set of three wraps replaces 10–15 rolls of plastic wrap, which means significant savings in the long run.

4. Multi-purpose use
Beeswax wraps are not just for covering bowls. You can wrap sandwiches, cheese, vegetables, fruit, bread and cakes in them – almost anything except raw meat and very fatty food. Use them at home, in a lunch bag, on a picnic or at work.

5. Natural preservation
Beeswax has natural antimicrobial properties that help keep food fresher for longer. Many users notice that fruit and vegetables stay fresh longer in beeswax wraps than in plastic bags.

Environmental impact

A single family that switches to beeswax wraps can cut plastic waste by over 10 kg a year! That is enough plastic to cover an area the size of a football pitch.

How do you use beeswax wraps?

Instructions for use:

  • Warm the wrap with the heat of your hands – hold it between your palms for a few seconds until it becomes soft and pliable
  • Wrap the food or cover the container – press the wrap with your hands so it takes the shape
  • Let it cool – after 10–15 seconds the wrap will set and hold its shape
  • Wash after use – only in cold or lukewarm water with mild soap
  • Air dry – hang it over a drying rack or leave it on a flat surface

💡 Tip: The more you use a wrap, the better it works! Over time the wax distributes even more evenly through the fabric, making the wrap more flexible and more adhesive.

What can you use beeswax wraps for?

Excellent for:

  • Covering bowls, pots and jars with leftover food
  • Wrapping sandwiches, pastries and doughnuts
  • Storing cheese, hard cheese and smoked meat
  • Wrapping fruit, vegetables, nuts and dried fruit
  • Wrapping bread and flatbreads
  • Storing cakes, biscuits and pies
  • Packing snacks for a journey

Avoid:

  • Raw meat and fish (bacteria can contaminate the wrap)
  • Very hot food (it melts the wax)
  • Very fatty food (hard to wash off the wrap)
  • Washing in a washing machine or hot water (destroys the wax)
  • Drying in the sun or on a radiator (melts the wax)

How do you care for beeswax wraps?

Proper care is the key to making your beeswax wraps last:

  • Washing: In cold or lukewarm water (no warmer than 30°C) with mild soap or washing-up liquid
  • Drying: Always in the air, hung over a rack or a line. Never on a radiator or in direct sun.
  • Storage: Fold or roll them and keep them in a dry place. You can keep them in a drawer with your other kitchen cloths.
  • Handling: Avoid contact with sharp objects that could puncture or cut the wrap

How long do beeswax wraps last?

With proper use and care, beeswax wraps can last 12–18 months, and sometimes longer. The sign that a wrap has reached the end of its life is when the wax starts to flake off or when the wrap stops being water-resistant and tacky.

💡 Extending the lifespan: If you notice a wrap losing its tackiness early, you can "refresh" it at home. Lay it on a baking tray lined with baking paper, sprinkle finely grated beeswax over the surface and put it in the oven at 80–100°C for a couple of minutes until the wax melts. Take it out, let it cool and the wrap is as good as new!

What happens to a wrap at the end of its life?

Even at the end of its "life", a beeswax wrap does not stop being useful. Because they are completely natural, you can:

  • Compost them – cut them into small pieces and put them in the compost, where they will break down completely
  • Use them as a firelighter – the wax burns very well and makes an excellent firelighter.
  • Use them in the garden – shredded wraps can serve as mulch that breaks down over time

Unlike plastic wrap, which stays in the environment for hundreds of years, your beeswax wraps disappear without a trace and return to nature.

Frequently asked questions

Do beeswax wraps have a scent?
Yes, they have a pleasant, mild scent of beeswax and plant oils. The scent is natural and becomes subtler after a few washes. It does not affect the taste of food.

Can I wash the wraps in the dishwasher?
No, absolutely not! Hot water and aggressive detergents destroy the wax. Wash by hand only, in cold or lukewarm water.

Are beeswax wraps safe for children?
Absolutely! All the ingredients are natural and non-toxic. They are ideal for packing children's snacks for school or nursery.

How big a set do I need?
Our standard set contains three wraps in different sizes (20×20 cm, 30×30 cm, 40×40 cm), which covers most of a family's needs. If you pack lunches often or have a large family, you can take a second set as well.

What if a wrap tears?
Small holes can be patched by adding wax. For larger damage, the wrap can still serve to cover smaller items, or you can use the undamaged part.

Conclusion

Switching to beeswax wraps is one of the easiest and most impactful steps towards a more environmentally responsible life. No major change of habit is required – simply replace plastic wrap with a cloth. Everything else stays the same, except that you no longer throw plastic away every day and no longer expose your food to synthetic materials.

When you choose our beeswax wraps, you choose a product made with care on a family farm, from materials whose origin you know – beeswax from our own hives, natural cotton, plant oil and resin. No machine, no factory, only human hands and natural materials.

Our beeswax wraps are made by hand on the Aleksandrov farm. Every wrap is unique, and each carries the mark of a traditional craft and of care for the planet we leave to future generations.

🌿 A small change, a big impact: One beeswax wrap replaces roughly 100 metres of plastic wrap a year. A set of three wraps means over 300 metres less plastic in the environment. That is your personal revolution against plastic pollution.
