Natural beeswax candles

Why natural candles are a better choice for your home and health

When you light a candle at home, you want to create a warm atmosphere, unwind after a long day or simply enjoy a pleasant scent. But have you ever thought about what you are actually burning and how it affects your health and your surroundings? Natural beeswax candles are not just a trend – they are a return to tradition and a healthier way of living. And when they are handmade on a family farm, from wax out of our own hives, you get an authentic product of the kind that was once standard in every Serbian home.

What makes a candle natural?

A natural candle is one made from materials that come directly from nature, without synthetic additives, chemicals or petrochemical derivatives. Beeswax is the oldest and most authentic natural material for candle-making – a product bees create naturally as they build the comb.

Beeswax from our own farm

Our beeswax comes directly from the hives on the Aleksandrov farm in Gornja Lisina. The bees produce it from the nectar and pollen of the clean meadows of south-eastern Serbia, far from pollution and industry. Every gram of wax we use for our candles carries the story of our bees, our land and our commitment to tradition.

The wax has a natural golden colour and a mild honey scent that comes from the flowers our bees pollinated. For our natural candles we add nothing but a cotton wick. For decorative coloured candles we add only a few drops of dye intended for candles - enough to achieve the desired shade without compromising the natural character of the product.

Paraffin candles - a hidden danger in your home

Most candles you buy in supermarkets are made from paraffin – a by-product of petroleum refining. As they burn, paraffin candles release harmful chemicals into the air you breathe, including toluene and benzene – substances known as potential carcinogens.

Research has shown that prolonged exposure to burning paraffin candles can lead to breathing problems and allergic reactions, and in people with asthma or other respiratory conditions it can worsen symptoms.

How are our candles made?

Every one of our candles is handmade on the farm, with care and dedication to a traditional craft. The process is simple, but it requires knowledge, patience and love for what we do.

The ingredients we use:

  • 100% beeswax from our own farm - straight from our hives in Gornja Lisina
  • Cotton wick - natural, with no chemical coatings
  • A few drops of dye intended for candles - only for decorative coloured candles, safe to burn
  • And nothing else. No paraffin, no synthetic fragrances, no fillers, no chemicals.

We melt the wax in a water bath so that it retains all its natural properties. When it reaches the optimal temperature we carefully pour it into moulds, set the cotton wick and leave it to cool slowly. For our decorative coloured candles we add a few drops of dye intended for candles - enough to achieve the desired shade, but not so much as to compromise the natural character of the product.

Every candle is unique, with slight variations in colour and shade that come from seasonal change - depending on which flowers were in bloom when the bees gathered pollen, the natural colour of the wax can vary from light cream to golden yellow.

Why choose beeswax candles?

1. Clean air in your home
Beeswax is the only natural wax that emits negative ions as it burns. These ions bind to positively charged particles in the air – dust, pollen, smoke, bacteria – and neutralise them, making the air cleaner. It is similar to the effect you get after rain or beside a waterfall.

2. Longer burning, better value
Although beeswax candles cost more to buy, they burn considerably longer than paraffin candles – as much as 2-3 times longer. The denser structure of the wax allows slower and more even burning, which means you will spend less money in the end.

3. A natural, pleasant scent
Beeswax candles have a mild, natural honey scent that comes from the nectar and pollen the bees gathered. There is no need to add artificial fragrances – nature has already done it all for you.

4. Brighter and warmer light
The light beeswax emits is closest to natural sunlight. This warm, golden light is gentler on the eyes and creates a more authentic atmosphere in a room.

5. Support for local beekeeping and nature conservation
By buying our beeswax candles you directly support local beekeeping and agriculture. Every candle bought helps our farm continue with traditional production and the care of our bees. And bees pollinate over 70% of the crops people consume, which means protecting them is not only our concern – it is a concern for all our futures.

When you buy from us, you know exactly where the product comes from – from our hives in Gornja Lisina, with no intermediaries, no imports and no compromise on quality.

How do you recognise a good natural beeswax candle?

Unfortunately, the market is full of products that claim to be "natural" but are not entirely so. Many producers mix beeswax with cheaper paraffin or add artificial colours and fragrances. Here is what to look out for:

Composition: Look for a label with clear ingredients. With us it is simple: 100% beeswax from our own farm, a cotton wick, and for decorative coloured candles - a few drops of dye intended for candles. Nothing more.

Colour: Natural beeswax has a golden-yellow or creamy white colour, depending on the type of flowers the bees gather pollen from. Our decorative candles have added colour for aesthetic appearance, but the base is always pure beeswax.

Scent: Natural beeswax candles have a mild, subtle scent of honey and flowers. We add no artificial fragrances - only the natural honey aroma that comes from the wax.

Wick: The best wicks are 100% cotton, without metal cores or chemical coatings. We use cotton wicks exclusively.

Origin: Buy directly from a beekeeper or farm where you can trace the origin of the product. That way you know what you are getting.

Transparency: A good producer has nothing to hide – they speak openly about the production process, the composition and the origin.

💡 Tip: If a candle burns with black smoke or leaves soot on the holder, that is a sign of poor quality. Natural beeswax candles burn cleanly, with minimal smoke.

Common questions about natural candles

How long can a beeswax candle last?
A standard beeswax candle can burn for 50-80 hours, depending on its size. That is significantly longer than a paraffin candle of the same size, which usually burns for 20-30 hours.

Are natural candles safe for children and pets?
Yes. Because they do not emit toxic substances, beeswax candles are safer than paraffin ones. Of course, as with any candle, never leave one burning unattended and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

Can natural candles be used all year round?
Absolutely! While paraffin candles can be unpleasant during hot months because they release pollutants into already warm air, natural beeswax candles are an excellent choice in every season. In winter they create a warm atmosphere, and in summer their air-purifying ability comes into its own.

The ecological and ethical advantage of our candles

At a time when we all strive for a sustainable way of living, natural candles made from local beeswax are more than a healthy choice – they are an ethical one too. Our wax is a renewable resource that bees produce every year, entirely naturally. After burning, the wax is fully biodegradable and leaves no trace in nature.

Production on our farm is environmentally responsible – we do not use pesticides near the hives, we do not treat the wax industrially and we add no chemicals. Which means that from the hive to your home, the product stays pure and natural.

Paraffin, on the other hand, is a fossil fuel that contributes to pollution and requires extensive industrial processes to produce. Every paraffin candle you replace with our natural candle is a small but significant step towards a more environmentally responsible home and support for local production.

Conclusion

Switching to natural beeswax candles is not just a trend – it is a conscious decision for a healthier home and a cleaner planet. Although the initial investment may be greater, the benefits are manifold: cleaner air, longer burning, a natural scent and support for local agriculture.
